Berkley

1/30/2009
We adopted Berkley on 12/23, so he has been with us for nearly 6 weeks. During the last few weeks, Berkley has started to scratch on the door to go out. One day he even scratched every 15 minutes or so on the door because he wanted to go out to play! He was housebroken within a few days. We just took him out frequently and praised him well. It didn't hurt that he saw our other dog outside either.
He really enjoys our two very long walks/play sessions every day. He has met many friends on the path and often plays with a 5 month old Border Collie named Libby. He also looks for his favorite lab, Murphy. He doesn’t seem to mind the cold, unlike me! But, I bundle up and Berkley definitely keeps me moving!
He has been to the vet twice and goes back this Tuesday. He seems to love the vet. The only way I can describe Berkley is that he loves everyone and everything. He is a big love bug! He very rarely gets rough.
Berkley begins puppy classes tomorrow. Even though he already sits, stays, lays down, comes and gives each paw on command with treat, we think it is important for him to be well socialized and would like our daughter to be part of the process. He will one day be a very big boy, so we want to be sure to have him listening well early on. The whole family is quite excited for our big day!
Berkley continues to bring us so much joy. Our older dog may actually be warming up to him. Berkley continues to be persistent and really tries to get Blaise to like him.

Berkley has adjusted so well to our home, and his surroundings. His favorite activities include going to the local sports field and running around and sometimes retrieving a ball. He enjoys taking our daughter to school, but cries when she walks in. Loves picking her up even more. Our 17 1/2 year old mixed breed little dog pays no attention to him, but like a good man, he keeps trying. Maybe one day she'll look his way! He has made some other friends on our walking path though, a 5 month old border collie and a lab named Murphy. They give him lots of attention! However, he still comes home begging for attention from the old gal. Three weeks in, and it still hasn't happened. You gotta admire his persistence!
I am home with him all day. He likes when the whole gang is here, but our time together is pretty special. He usually takes his mid morning nap on me and brings me his dog bowl when he is ready to eat. At 13 weeks old, he is often hungry! However, we keep his meals to 3 a day.
I have started a blog/web page on Berkley. It is still under construction, but should be up and running shortly. Here is the url: http://web.me.com/eslteach1/Site_2/Blog/Blog.html
We are soooo thankful to have Berkley in our lives. He has brought a lot of joy to us. He keeps me busy, but his is well worth it. My daughter loves having him and is learning the true meaning of unconditional love.
Thank you,
The Cavages

Hi Claudine,
Marie asked me to just check in from time to time on how Berkely was doing. Well .. .he is doing great. He has adjusted well to our home and our older dog. Our older dog, Blaise, has adjusted to Berkley as well. Here is a picture.
Thanks again. Berkely is such a nice addition to our family.
